  • 476The keysRevelation 1:17 and 18
  • Revelation 1:19 and 20

The risen Jesus on the island of Patmos, to John, who has fallen at his feet as if dead at his appearance.

Therefore write down the things you have seen, and the things that are, and the things that will happen after this. This is the mystery of the seven stars you saw in My right hand and of the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
  • Revelation 2:1-3

The opening of the first letter, addressed to the angel of the church at Ephesus.

“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your labor, and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate those who are evil, and you have tested and exposed as liars those who falsely claim to be apostles. Without growing weary, you have persevered and endured many things for the sake of My name.”
  • 477Ephesus: first loveRevelation 2:4
  • Revelation 2:6 and 7

Closing the letter to Ephesus, after the charge that the church has let go of its first love.

But you have this to your credit: You hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to eat from the tree of life in the Paradise of God.
  • Revelation 2:8 and 9

So begins the second letter, to the church in Smyrna, which is poor and slandered.

To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of the First and the Last, who died and returned to life. I know your affliction and your poverty—though you are rich! And I am aware of the slander of those who falsely claim to be Jews, but are in fact a synagogue of Satan.
  • 478Smyrna: faithful to the endRevelation 2:10
  • Revelation 2:12-16

The third of the seven letters, to the church in Pergamum, where his faithful witness Antipas was killed.

To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of the One who holds the sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you live, where the throne of Satan sits. Yet you have held fast to My name and have not denied your faith in Me, even in the day when My faithful witness Antipas was killed among you, where Satan dwells. But I have a few things against you, because some of you hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block before the Israelites so they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality. In the same way, some of you also hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Therefore repent! Otherwise I will come to you shortly and wage war against them with the sword of My mouth.
  • 479Pergamum: a new nameRevelation 2:17
  • Revelation 2:18-25

Letter four of the seven, to the church in Thyatira; it is the longest in the series.

To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like a blazing fire and whose feet are like polished bronze. I know your deeds—your love, your faith, your service, your perseverance—and your latter deeds are greater than your first. But I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads My servants to be sexually immoral and to eat food sacrificed to idols. Even though I have given her time to repent of her immorality, she is unwilling. Behold, I will cast her onto a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her will suffer great tribulation unless they repent of her deeds. Then I will strike her children dead, and all the churches will know that I am the One who searches minds and hearts, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. But I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned the so-called deep things of Satan: I will place no further burden upon you. Nevertheless, hold fast to what you have until I come.
  • 480Thyatira: the morning starRevelation 2:28
  • Revelation 3:1

Sardis receives the fifth letter, which, unlike the earlier ones, opens straight away with criticism instead of praise.

“To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of the One who holds the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation for being alive, yet you are dead.”
  • 481Sardis: wake upRevelation 3:2
  • Revelation 3:4-6

Further into the letter to Sardis, about the small group there who have kept their clothes clean.

But you do have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments, and because they are worthy, they will walk with Me in white. Like them, he who overcomes will be dressed in white. And I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life, but I will confess his name before My Father and His angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
  • 482Philadelphia: an open doorRevelation 3:8
  • Revelation 3:9 and 10

In the middle of the letter to Philadelphia, a church with little strength that has nevertheless kept his word.

Look at those who belong to the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews but are liars instead. I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and they will know that I love you. Because you have kept My command to persevere, I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
  • 483No one takes your crownRevelation 3:11
  • Revelation 3:12 and 13

At the close of the sixth letter, the one to Philadelphia, with the promise for whoever overcomes.

The one who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will never again leave it. Upon him I will write the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God (the new Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven from My God), and My new name. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  • 486Rebuked out of loveRevelation 3:19
  • 487Laodicea: I stand at the doorRevelation 3:20
  • Revelation 3:21 and 22

The final words of the seventh and last letter, to the church in Laodicea.

“To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to sit with Me on My throne, just as I overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
  • 488As a thiefRevelation 16:15
  • 489All things newRevelation 21:5 and 6
  • Revelation 21:7 and 8

“The one who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son. But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and sexually immoral and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death.”

  • 490I, JesusRevelation 22:13 and 16
  • Revelation 22:14 and 15

At the end of Revelation, about who may enter God’s new city and who remains outside.

Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may enter the city by its gates. But outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.
