To Sardis Christ says: thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. A reputation without reality.

The warning is well chosen. The citadel of Sardis stood on a steep rock and was considered impregnable. Yet it was taken twice in its history, because nobody was keeping watch. According to Herodotus, one of King Cyrus's soldiers climbed the wall unseen. Be watchful, says Christ. Precisely where you feel safe.
