Word 485 of 491New beginnings

You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, white garments so that you may be clothed and your shameful nakedness not exposed, and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.

Gold, clothes and eye salve

Laodicea was proud of itself. After a severe earthquake around the year 60, the city rebuilt itself without help from Rome, writes the Roman historian Tacitus. It had banks, it sold glossy black wool, and a well-known medical school stood nearby. Many interpreters think Christ strikes the city at exactly those points.

You have everything, the church thinks. But Christ sees poverty, nakedness and blindness. The most painful part: you don't know it. Yet this is counsel, not a verdict. Come and buy from me, he says.

Question for today

What can't I see about myself that someone else may have seen long ago?

Prayer

Lord, I like to think I can manage on my own. Anoint my eyes, so that I see myself as you see me. Amen.
