Truly, truly, I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go. Follow Me.

When you are old
The risen Jesus says this to Peter by the lake, after asking him three times whether he loves him. Being young means dressing yourself, literally fastening your own belt, and going where you want. Being old: stretching out your hands and being taken away. John says it was about Peter's death. Ancient sources say: crucified in Rome.
Following often begins in freedom and sometimes ends in dependence. That is true too for anyone who grows old or ill and has to be dressed by others. Jesus doesn't promise that you stay in control. He does promise that this road too can honour God. And then: follow me.
Question for today
If I lose control of my life one day, how do I want to believe?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, for now I still often go where I want. If someone ever has to carry me, let me still belong to you. Amen.
