You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me!

Why the truth grates

This conversation began with people who had come to believe in Jesus. Now he says: you want to kill me. This verse was later used to demonise all Jews, with terrible results. But for Jesus it isn't about descent. Whose child you are shows in what you do.

Here that means lying and killing. Whoever lies first destroys the truth, and then often people too. And then: because I speak the truth, you don't believe me. A lie is sometimes easier to believe. It asks nothing of you.

Question for today

Which truth about myself do I find hardest to hear?

Prayer

Lord, you speak the truth, even when it stings. Open my ears to what I would rather avoid. Keep me from the lie that sounds so pleasant. Amen.
