Truly, truly, I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

A son stays
Jesus uses an image from an ordinary household. A slave lived in the house, but didn't really belong there. He could be sold or sent away. A son stayed, whatever happened. The house was his too.
Then Jesus says: if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. He means himself. He doesn't just release you, he takes you into the family. You're not a servant on probation, but a child who is at home.
Question for today
Do I live with God like a servant on probation, or like a child at home?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you that I don't have to earn my place with God. I belong as his child, and I can stay. Amen.
