Before Abraham was
The conversation grew heated. Jesus said that Abraham rejoiced to see his day. Thou art not yet fifty years old, they said, and hast thou seen Abraham?
Grammatically, his answer doesn't fit. Not: before Abraham was, I was. But: I am. These are the words with which God made himself known to Moses. His listeners understood exactly. They took up stones.
