Look up

Jesus describes fearful times. People faint with terror at what is coming on the world. And precisely then he says: stand up. Luke uses the same verb for the woman who had walked bent double for eighteen years, until Jesus healed her.

Fear makes you small. You look at the ground and hunch your shoulders. Jesus asks the opposite, not because things aren't so bad, but because something is on its way: your redemption is drawing near. Whoever expects that doesn't have to stay bowed down.

Question for today

What news makes me stoop, and what would looking up mean there?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, the news sometimes makes me small. Teach me to raise my eyes, because you are on your way. Amen.
