Word 356 of 491Doubt

I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed: One will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain together: One will be taken and the other left.

Taken or left

Two people in one bed, two women at the same hand mill. One is taken, the other left. Jesus doesn't say what that means. Many people think of a sudden rapture, with believers taken up to heaven. That reading only took hold from the nineteenth century onwards.

Just before, with Noah, it was the others who were swept away by the flood. So being taken isn't automatically being saved. It remains a mystery, and you may honestly say so. What is clear is this: two people can live side by side and still not both be ready.

Question for today

Do I lean on the faith of the people beside me, or do I have my own bond with God?

Prayer

Lord, what you say about the future remains a mystery to me. Let me be ready today, with my own heart turned to you. Amen.
