Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.

Too familiar to believe

After the reading in the synagogue, the people of Nazareth were impressed at first. But their amazement soon turned to doubt. Jesus then pointed to two stories from their own Scriptures. In them God's help went not to Israel, but to a widow in Zarephath and to Naaman the Syrian.

That hit hard. They drove him out of the town, to the brow of the hill, intending to throw him off. The people who have known you longest sometimes see the least. That can also be true of anyone who has thought for years that they know Jesus.

Question for today

Where do I think I know Jesus so well that I no longer listen?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, keep me from letting you become ordinary to me. Surprise me again, even in the things I think I have known for years. Amen.
