Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you? … Then neither do I condemn you. Now go and sin no more.

Grace first

The story of the woman caught in adultery is missing from the oldest manuscripts of John, but it probably goes back to an early tradition. The men who wanted to stone her had gone. Only now did Jesus turn to the woman herself. He addressed her as he addressed his own mother: woman. And he asked her a question. Until then, no one had asked her anything.

Then Jesus said two things, and the order matters. First: neither do I condemn you. Only then: go, and sin no more. The new life isn't a condition for that grace. It comes after.

Question for today

Do I dare to believe that grace comes first?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, your grace comes first, even before I have done anything right. Let my new life be a response, not a payment. Amen.
