I say to you that many will come from the east and the west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

From east and west
Jews expected a great feast at the end of time. Isaiah spoke of a banquet on the mountain for all peoples. Jesus says this just after a non-Jewish officer amazed him. People from far away sit at table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Those who felt like heirs are left outside.
Over the centuries this saying has been used against Jews. That is a misuse. Jesus was Jewish himself, as were almost all his listeners. He is warning everyone who takes their place at the table for granted, Christians included.
Question for today
Who would I rather not see next to me at the table in God's kingdom?
Prayer
Lord, your table is bigger than my circle. Make me glad of every guest you invite. Amen.
