Disregard them! They are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.

Who's in front?

Jesus had just said that it isn't outward rules but the heart that makes a person clean. The disciples told him that the Pharisees, devout experts in the law, were offended by this. His answer was short: let them alone. Then came an image everyone grasped at once: a blind man showing another blind man the way.

In 1568 Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted six blind men walking in a line. The first has already fallen into the ditch, and the others stumble after him. Jesus isn't warning against leaders in general, but against leaders who are blind themselves. The warning applies to you too, whenever you guide others as a parent, colleague or friend.

Question for today

Who am I following, and can they see where they're going?

Prayer

Lord, open my eyes. Keep me from following the blind, or from leading others the wrong way myself. Amen.
