Crumbs from the table

A Canaanite woman, an outsider, begged Jesus to help her daughter. At first he said nothing. Then he said something that sounds harsh: it isn't right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.

She wouldn't be sent away. Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. It is unlikely a Christian would invent this conversation. Jesus doesn't come out of it well, and she does. He praised her faith, and her daughter was healed.

Question for today

Do I dare to keep on, even when it seems God is silent?

Prayer

Lord, sometimes you seem silent. Give me this woman's persistence and courage. I am content with the crumbs from your table. Amen.
