If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

Remain and ask
This looks like a blank cheque: ask whatever you wish. But Jesus says it in the middle of his picture of the vine and the branches. So it comes with two conditions: staying joined to him, as a branch is to the vine, and letting his words remain in you.
When you spend a lot of time with someone, you start to think the way they do and want what they want. That is how the words of Jesus come to live in you. Then what you ask changes too. Your prayer is no longer a wish list, but a conversation with someone you know.
Question for today
Which words of Jesus live in me, and do they colour my prayers?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, let your words remain in me. Shape my desires, so that I ask for what you want to give. Amen.
