I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Not orphans
When the philosopher Socrates had to die, his followers felt, according to Plato, like children losing their father. They would spend the rest of their lives as orphans. Jesus saw the same fear in his own disciples. And he uses the same word: orphans, which the King James Version renders as comfortless.
But he adds: I will come to you. Socrates didn't come back. Jesus did: on the third day he stood alive among his disciples. They weren't left with just a fond memory, but with a living Lord.
Question for today
Do I live as if Jesus is far away, or as if he is alive and close?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you kept your promise: you are alive. Thank you that I have more than a memory of you. Amen.
