Word 124 of 491Prayer

I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight. All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

Matthew 11:25-27

Thanks after a setback

This is one of the few prayers of Jesus in the first three Gospels. He thanks his Father that the wise and learned miss what is shown to little children. Those were his followers: fishermen, a tax collector, ordinary people.

The moment is striking. He had just seen whole villages refuse to listen. Perhaps he was disappointed. Yet he begins to give thanks, for those who do see it: yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in your sight.

Question for today

What can I thank God for, even now that something has let me down?

Prayer

Father, I can be disappointed and still thank you. Let me learn that from Jesus, today too. Amen.
