Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

A yoke that fits
A yoke is a wooden beam laid across the necks of two oxen so that they pull together. Jesus was a carpenter. Around the year 150, Justin Martyr wrote that he made ploughs and yokes. So he knew how a yoke should fit.
The Greek word translated easy also means well-fitting. A yoke that doesn't chafe. And notice what he doesn't say. Not: finish everything first, then you'll get rest. But: come. Rest is not a reward for a completed to-do list. You receive it along the way, because you are no longer pulling alone.
Question for today
What yoke am I carrying right now, and does it fit?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you know my week. The things that went well and the things still left undone. I come to you, not because I'm finished, but because you call. Teach me to pull at your pace, beside you and not ahead of you. Amen.
