Word 276 of 491New beginnings

Finally he came to his senses and said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have plenty of food? But here I am, starving to death! I will get up and go back to my father and say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.”’

Luke 15:17 and 18

Coming to himself

The story starts with an unusual request. You normally received your inheritance only after your father died. The younger son wants his share now. He squanders everything and ends up with a foreigner's pigs. For a Jewish boy it could hardly get lower.

Then it says: he came to himself. Before he gets back to his father, he gets back to himself. Whether his regret was pure, we don't know. Perhaps it was mostly his hunger talking. It's fine if the way back begins with an empty stomach.

Question for today

What would I see if I came to myself honestly today?

Prayer

Father, sometimes I'm stuck in a place I never wanted to be. Wake me up to where I am, and let me know that the way to you is open. Amen.
