But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.

A father who runs
In the parable of the prodigal son, the younger son comes home penniless. He has prepared a speech. He wants to work as a hired servant. But his father sees him from far away.
The father runs. Scholars such as Kenneth Bailey point out that an older man in that culture did not run. It was considered undignified. This father does it anyway, and falls on his son's neck before he can finish his speech. That is how Jesus describes God.
Question for today
What speech have I prepared, while the Father is already running towards me?
Prayer
Father, I often come with explanations and excuses. You come with open arms. Teach me to come home without first finishing my defence. Amen.
