Truly, truly, I tell you, it is not because you saw these signs that you are looking for Me, but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.

Bread that lasts
On the far side of the lake, Jesus shared out five loaves among thousands. Now they have followed him to Capernaum. Jesus is honest: you came for a full stomach, not for the signs. The miracle pointed to who he was, but all they saw was bread. Still, he doesn't send them away. He points to food that doesn't go bad. He gives it himself, with God's seal of approval.
He doesn't forbid working for your bread, but it isn't the highest thing. Many people seek God for what he gives: good health, a way out, a full plate. Jesus invites them to look further.
Question for today
Do I seek Jesus for who he is, or mostly for what I hope to get from him?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I often come to you with a list. Make my longing bigger than that list. It is you I am looking for. Amen.
