One word: come
Only Matthew tells us what Peter did when he saw Jesus coming across the water in the storm. The idea was his own. If it's really you, Lord, he shouted, call me out to you across the water. A strange mix of doubt and daring.
Jesus answers with a single word. He doesn't say it is too dangerous, nor that everything will be fine. Just: come. And Peter really did walk on the water, if only for a moment. The others stayed dry, but they also stayed in their seats.
Question for today
Would I step out of the boat if Jesus only said: come?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I would rather stay somewhere safe. When you call me, make me brave enough to go. Amen.
