In the fourth watch

The disciples were rowing against the wind on the lake. Only in the fourth watch of the night, somewhere between three and six in the morning, did Jesus come to them across the water. They thought he was a ghost.

What Jesus says, in Greek, is literally: I am. The same words with which God made himself known to Moses in the Greek translation of Exodus. He doesn't always come when we want him to. But he comes, in the middle of the storm, and says who he is.

Question for today

What storm am I rowing through now, and do I see him coming?

Prayer

Lord, sometimes you come later than I hoped. Help me to recognise your voice in the dark. Take away my fear and step into my boat. Amen.
