God will pour out his Spirit on all people: sons and daughters will prophesy, old men will dream dreams, young men will see visions, even servants, both men and women. Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.
Peter quotes this prophecy on the day of Pentecost: 'this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel'. Importantly, Peter links the outpouring directly to Jesus: 'being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this' (Acts 2:33). Jesus promised this himself (John 14 to 16), and John the Baptist had already said that Jesus would baptise 'with the Holy Ghost, and with fire' (Matthew 3:11).
