On snakes and scorpions

The disciples Jesus had sent ahead two by two are back from their journey through the villages. They are given authority over snakes and scorpions. Anyone travelling on foot through dry country really did come across them. Moses reminded Israel that God had led them through a desert full of snakes and scorpions.

So what does it mean: nothing will harm you? Not that they would never suffer. Later, followers of Jesus were imprisoned or killed. It means that evil is no longer an equal opponent. You can go on your way, even when there is danger along it.

Question for today

Which fear keeps me from taking the road God shows me?

Prayer

Lord, evil sometimes looks big. Give me courage to keep walking, and protect me on the road you show me. Amen.
