Word 246 of 491Love

The reason the Father loves Me is that I lay down My life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from My Father.

Given, not taken

Jesus uses a word for authority here: I have the right to do this. Authority to lay down his life, and to take it up again. The New Testament usually says that God raised him from the dead. Here Jesus speaks as if he does it himself.

Having something taken and giving it are very different things. What is taken from you makes you a victim. What you give remains yours, even if it costs everything. Not every sacrifice is good. Sometimes you need to say no. But Jesus chooses for himself. No one forces his love.

Question for today

Am I giving freely, or am I really letting something be taken from me?

Prayer

Lord, teach me to give out of love, not out of fear or pressure. And help me say no where that is needed. Amen.
