Word 238 of 491Calling

While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

While it is day

Jesus says this just before he heals the man born blind. A day labourer worked until it got dark. After that, nobody could work the fields. The King James has: I must work. But the oldest manuscripts say: we must work, as in the modern translation. Jesus brings his disciples into the work.

Jesus speaks plainly about time here. Night is coming: for Jesus his death, for us the end of a chance or a stage of life. That is no reason to panic, but it is a reason to pay attention. What can be done today may not be possible tomorrow.

Question for today

Which good work am I putting off, as if the day would never end?

Prayer

Father, you give me this day, no more and no less. Show me the work that is mine today. Amen.
