Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

No air, no light
Where this says 'basket', older translations say 'bushel': a wooden tub of almost nine litres for measuring grain. Putting one over an oil lamp did more than hide the light. The little flame ran out of air and went out.
Simple houses in Galilee often had just one room to live in. One lamp on a stand was enough for everyone inside. If you hide your faith to avoid trouble, you slowly starve it of air. And the first place for that light to shine is simply your own home.
Question for today
Who around me needs my light most today?
Prayer
Lord, you have lit a light in me. Do not let it go out. Put me where I can give light to the people close to me. Amen.
