Just one thing first

A disciple asked if he could first go and bury his father. A reasonable request. In Jewish tradition, burying your parents was one of the weightiest duties. According to the Mishnah, an early collection of Jewish rules, anyone who had to bury a dead person was even excused from the daily prayer.

Perhaps the father was still alive, and the man meant: once he has died, I'll come. Either way, Jesus' answer is meant to jolt. Let those who are spiritually dead see to that. Following Jesus can't wait until everything in your life is wrapped up.

Question for today

Where do I say to Jesus: just one thing first?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, there is always something that has to come first. Help me to follow you now, and not only once everything is sorted. Amen.
