Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

More than food and clothes
Jesus was speaking to people for whom food and clothing were no luxury. Many listeners were day labourers and smallholders. What you earned today, you ate tonight. A cloak was so valuable that the law said: if you have taken it as a pledge, give it back for the night. It was also someone's blanket.
It is to them, of all people, that he says: do not worry. That sounds almost cruel, until you follow his reasoning. God has already given you the greatest things: your life and your body. Would he be mean with the smaller ones?
Question for today
Do I trust God with my life, but not with my shopping list?
Prayer
God, you gave me breath and a body without my asking. I want to trust you with bread and clothes as well. Amen.
