This very night you will all fall away on account of Me. For it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.

On the way to Galilee

On the way to the Mount of Olives, Jesus quotes the prophet Zechariah: the shepherd is struck down and his flock runs off in all directions. Not one disciple will stumble, he says, but all of them, this very night. He knows it, and he says it without reproach.

In the same breath he makes an appointment. After I am raised, I will go on ahead of you to Galilee. That is where it had begun, among the boats and the nets. He names the meeting place before they even run away. At the empty tomb the angel reminds the women of it.

Question for today

Do I dare to go back to where he is waiting for me, even after I have run away?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you knew your friends would run away, and still you told them where you would see them. Wait for me too. Amen.
