Word 139 of 491Hope

But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

Matthew 13:16 and 17

What prophets longed to see

For centuries devout Jews looked forward to the time when God would step in. Prophets wrote about it, the righteous prayed for it. In Luke, Jesus mentions kings as well. What they longed for, fishermen from Galilee simply saw happen.

That doesn't make the disciples better than the prophets. They were in the right place at the right time. The risk of such a privilege is getting used to it. What you see every day no longer strikes you. Even someone who has heard about Jesus for years can forget how special that is.

Question for today

What have I seen of Jesus that I have come to take for granted?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you let me see what the prophets longed for. Give me fresh wonder every day. Amen.
