Betrayed with a kiss

A kiss was an ordinary greeting, even between a disciple and his teacher. According to Mark and Matthew, that kiss was the agreed signal. Luke only says that Judas came up to Jesus to kiss him. Jesus speaks to him first.

He doesn't say: traitor. He says: Judas. And he names what is happening: a sign of friendship used to hand someone over. Whoever has been betrayed by someone close knows that pain. Yet to the very end Jesus calls Judas by his name.

Question for today

Do I ever use friendliness to hide something else?

Prayer

Lord, you were betrayed with a sign of love. You know the pain of those hurt by a friend. Make my love genuine. Amen.
