But understand this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect.

At an unexpected hour
Shortly before this, Jesus spoke about treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near. Now he compares his coming to a burglar: you don't know when. A burglar comes while you sleep and takes what you haven't guarded well.
If your treasure is in your house, his coming feels like a loss. If your treasure is already with God, there is nothing left to lose. So being ready doesn't mean lying awake all night. It means your heart is already in the right place. Then his coming isn't a break-in, but a homecoming.
Question for today
What would I lose if Jesus came tonight, and what would I not lose at all?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I can't know the hour of your coming. Make me free rather than afraid. Let my heart already be with you. Amen.
