If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father’s glory with the holy angels.

Not ashamed
Just before this, Jesus spoke about taking up your cross. Crucifixion was the most humiliating death the Romans knew. Belonging to a crucified man brought no honour, only shame. And Jesus calls his generation adulterous. In prophets like Hosea, that was the picture of a people who leave God.
Shame is quieter than fear. You deny nothing, you just keep quiet for a moment, or you laugh along. But there is another side to this. According to the letter to the Hebrews, Jesus is not ashamed to call us his brothers and sisters.
Question for today
Which words of Jesus would I rather not stand up for when others are listening?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you bore the shame of the cross so that you could call us brothers and sisters. Give me courage to stay with you and your words, even when it costs me. Amen.
