Someone anointed with the Spirit of God is sent to bring good news to the poor. He is to proclaim liberty to the captives, sight to the blind and freedom to the oppressed, and the acceptable year of the LORD.

A key text. In the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus reads it aloud and rolls up the scroll. Then he says: 'This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.' He stops in the middle of Isaiah 61:2, before 'the day of vengeance of our God'. Interpreters see in this that his first coming brings grace and keeps judgement for later. Jesus' ministry begins with the anointing by the Spirit (Luke 3:22; 4:1; 4:14; 4:18).
