In the wilderness the people are bitten by serpents. At God's command Moses makes a serpent of brass on a pole; whoever looks at it lives.
Jesus uses this image himself in his conversation with Nicodemus, just before the best-known verse in the Bible (John 3:16). Whoever believes 'looks' to the lifted-up Son and lives.
