God tells Noah to build an ark. When the flood comes, Noah and his family, eight souls, are saved in the ark, through the water.
Jesus uses the flood as an image for the unexpected coming of the Son of Man: they did eat, they drank, they married, until the day that Noah entered into the ark. Peter sees the ark as a picture of baptism: as eight souls were saved by water, so baptism now saves, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The church was later often pictured as a ship, and the main part of a church building is still called the nave, from the Latin navis, ship.
