David writes: 'The LORD said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand.' And: 'You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.'
This is the Old Testament verse most often quoted or alluded to in the New Testament. Jesus himself uses it to put a question to the scribes: if David calls the Messiah 'my Lord', how can he be only his son? Melchizedek is the mysterious priest-king from Genesis 14, long before Levi and the priesthood of Aaron.
