On that day the LORD will go out to fight against the nations. His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the mountain will split in two. And the LORD will be king over all the earth.
The New Testament does not quote this text word for word, but the place says a great deal. On the Mount of Olives Jesus speaks about his return, and from the Mount of Olives he is taken up, with the promise that he will come back 'in like manner'. That is why many Christians see a prophecy of his second coming here. On the slope of the Mount of Olives lies one of the oldest and most important Jewish cemeteries, partly because people expected redemption to begin there. Once again a text about the LORD himself that Christians apply to Jesus (see chapter G).
