Write down the vision and make it plain on tablets. The vision waits for its appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it, for it will surely come. The righteous will live by his faith.
Habakkuk wrestles with the question why God lets evil continue, and receives a vision that waits for its time. The Greek translation turned 'it will come' into a person: 'he that cometh'. Hebrews reads it that way: yet a little while, and he that shall come will come. It was also the question of John the Baptist: art thou he that should come? The last line, 'the just shall live by faith', became a key text for Paul (Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11), and centuries later for Martin Luther.
