We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.

Never good enough
Jesus compares his contemporaries to sulking children in the marketplace. Whatever you play, they won't join in. John the Baptist didn't eat or drink, and they said he had a devil. Jesus did eat and drink, and they called him a man gluttonous, and a winebibber.
That last insult is striking. No Christian would invent it about Jesus. That is exactly why it counts as genuine. And it shows: whoever doesn't want to will always find a reason.
Question for today
Do I sometimes look for reasons not to have to join in?
Prayer
Lord, keep me from a heart that always finds something to grumble about. Let me dance when you play, and weep when you weep. Amen.
