The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

Wind and Spirit

In Greek the same word is used for wind and Spirit: pneuma. In Hebrew it's the same: ruach. Jesus plays with that double meaning in his night-time conversation with Nicodemus. Where it listeth means: where it pleases.

You can't see the wind, but you notice what it does. Trees move, sails fill. It is like that with the Spirit. You can't capture him in a diagram. But you can see what he changes in people.

Question for today

Where have I felt the wind of the Spirit, even though I couldn't see it?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, blow where you will, through my life too. Let me not want to understand everything, but let myself be carried along. Amen.
