Word 164 of 491Trust

But beware of men; for they will hand you over to their councils and flog you in their synagogues. On My account, you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say. For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Not alone before the judge

Here Jesus looks beyond the first journey through Galilee. He speaks of courts, flogging in the synagogue, governors and kings. It came true. Shortly after Pentecost, Peter and John stood before the Jewish council. Its members were amazed at the boldness of two uneducated men.

That is what this promise is about. It is no reason never to think about what you believe. It is help for the moment when you are cornered and have no words. Then you are not the only one speaking.

Question for today

Have I ever frozen when I could have trusted that the words would come?

Prayer

Father, I'm afraid of standing there lost for words. When it really comes to it, give me your words. Amen.
