Word 178 of 310Rest

The kingdom of God is like a man who scatters seed on the ground. Night and day he sleeps and wakes, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he knows not how.

It grows while you sleep

This short parable is found only in Mark. A farmer sows, and then goes to sleep. Nights and days pass. The seed grows, and he doesn't know how.

Mark then uses a word our word automatic comes from: the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself. For people who work hard, this is a liberating parable. Your job is to sow. God does the growing, even while you sleep.

Question for today

What have I sown that I can now leave to God?

Prayer

Lord, I want to make everything grow myself. Teach me to sow, and then to sleep peacefully while you do the work. Amen.
