So you also, when you have done everything commanded of you, should say: We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.

Just doing your job

It sounds harsh. But there is something freeing in it. You don't have to keep a file of merits with God. You simply do your job.

It is also a medicine against pride. What you do, you don't do to be rewarded. And elsewhere Jesus says that the master will serve his faithful servants himself. Whoever expects nothing receives more than he ever imagined.

Question for today

Do I do good to be rewarded, or because it is good?

Prayer

Lord, free me from the longing for recognition. Let me simply do my job, for you. Amen.
