But I tell you not to resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.

The other cheek

For a right-handed person, a blow on the right cheek was usually a slap with the back of the hand. Some interpreters point out that in those days this was mainly a humiliation, not a fight.

It doesn't mean you have to let everything happen. When Jesus himself was struck during his interrogation, he asked: why smitest thou me? He means: don't hit back, and don't let the other person decide who you are. That takes more courage than hitting back.

Question for today

How do I react when someone belittles me?

Prayer

Lord, give me the courage not to hit back, and the strength not to lose myself. Set me free from retaliation. Amen.
