Martha worked hard to make Jesus welcome. Her sister Mary sat at his feet and listened. Martha complained, and you can understand why. There was plenty to do. In old English, careful meant full of cares.
Jesus says her name twice. In the Bible that is a sign of closeness. That is how God calls Abraham, Samuel and later Saul. He doesn't blame Martha. He invites her. Work is good, but it isn't the one thing needful. Listen first, then act.

Lord, I am often Martha. Busy, well-meaning, worried about many things. Call me by my name. Teach me to sit with you first, before I go back to work. Amen.
