Let it be so now. It is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness in this way.

In the queue
John the Baptist baptised people who confessed their sins. When Jesus joined the queue, he was taken aback. I need to be baptised by you, he said, and you come to me?
Only Matthew preserves this conversation. Jesus didn't need baptism, and yet he let himself be baptised. He doesn't begin his work on a pedestal, but in the queue, among ordinary people with their faults.
Question for today
Where would I rather stand on a pedestal than in the queue?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you joined the queue among sinners. Thank you that you don't stand above me, but beside me. Amen.
