It is written
After his baptism Jesus spent forty days in the desert. He was hungry. The tempter challenged him three times: turn stones into bread, jump from the temple, bow down to me.
All three of Jesus' answers come from Deuteronomy, the book about Israel's forty years in the desert. Where Israel stumbled then, Jesus stands firm. Not with his own cleverness, but with words he knew.
